Aside from the obvious destination of Niagara Falls, there are many other great local attractions in and around Buffalo – the city closest to our dropzone. Here then is our recommended list of the top five unusual and interesting activities while you’re in the Buffalo area:
Decisions, decisions! Should you go with a Pedal-Powered Beer Bike or a Pedal-Powered Pontoon Boat? Whether you are a local or a visitor, a pedal tour gives you the chance to see Buffalo’s historical sights and landmarks from a whole new perspective. A friendly guide will be in charge as you and your party provide the pedal power to explore the city with this unique tour. We think it’s a supremely fun outdoor experience!
Axes and ales – what could go wrong? And who doesn’t want to relax with a bit of competitive axe-throwing and 8 beer taps? Surprisingly, this sport is truly accessible and isn’t a feat of strength. Rather, it’s about technique, paying attention to the instructors, and relaxing enough to enjoy yourself. Though Hatchets & Hops is mostly geared towards groups, there is a walk-in time slot on Sunday evenings (more info here in the FAQ). We are confident that this activity will hit the target for an axeciting evening of fun!
For foodies and curiosity seekers, Broadway Market is an excellent place to sample all that Buffalo’s local vendors have to offer. Started by a group of citizens on a city-donated parcel in 1888, Broadway Market is famous for its ethnic old-world shopping atmosphere. It’s fresh food merchant roster is comprised of more than 40 vendors – mostly family-owned, family-operated butcher shops, poultry stands, fruit/vegetable stands and bakeries – but the market also features restaurants, artisan soaps, clothing, jewelry and other treasures. Be sure to visit the Roof Garden too as it provides a chance to take in a 360 degree view of Buffalo’s city skyline.
Discover traditional sailing with the Spirit of Buffalo – a classic 73-ft topsail schooner. This beautiful ship with its magnificent red sails is available for day and evening sails on Lake Erie, sunset sails, craft brew cruises, wine in the wind sails, children’s pirate adventures, and educational excursions. Join the crew and hoist the sails – or just sit back, relax and experience Buffalo from a completely new and exciting vantage point.
Are you game for a once-in-a-lifetime thrill to finish off your fun tour of Buffalo? We are obviously a tad biased, but we think tandem skydiving is the perfection exclamation point to your time here in Western New York. Your instructor will guide you through pre-jump training, airplane exit, free fall, and piloting the canopy to landing. As if that wasn’t enough awesomeness, you will also enjoy incredible views of Lake Ontario, the Erie Canal, the mists from Niagara Falls, and even the cities of Rochester, Buffalo, and Toronto on your ride up to altitude and your gentle float back down to terra firma.
